The Federation of Saint Kitts and Nevis is a sovereign nation composed of two islands in the Lesser Antilles region of the Caribbean Sea. Christopher Columbus sighted both islands during his second voyage in 1493, naming Saint Kitts after his patron saint, Saint Christopher.
The first successful English colony in the West Indies was established on Saint Kitts in 1623 by Sir Thomas Warner. The island was then contested between French and English colonists throughout the 17th century, until it was ceded to Britain by the Treaty of Utrecht in 1713. Despite the French capturing Brimstone Hill in 1782, the 1783 Treaty of Paris restored Saint Kitts to British control. The name "Nevis" derives from Columbus's description of the clouds atop Nevis Peak as "las nieves" or "the snows." Today, Saint Kitts and Nevis is the smallest sovereign nation in the Americas, both in terms of land area and population. The largely Black population includes small mulatto, South Asian, and white minorities.
The main religious denominations are Anglican and Methodist, with a smaller Roman Catholic community.
